The effect of oriented cracks on seismic velocities

چکیده

We have considered the problem of elastic wave velocities in a matrix containing aligned ellipsoidal fluid-filled cracks. This problem is relevant o a variety of geophysical pplications, including crustal and mantle seismology and the behavior of stressed and dilatant rock. When the cracks are ellipsoids of revolution, the composite is transversely isotropic and is describable with five elastic constants. For aligned oblate spheroids the major reduction in velocity occurs along the axis of symmetry. The opening of new cracks, the widening of old cracks, or the reduction of pore pressure accompanying crustal dilatancy can be expected to cause a large decrease in compressional velocity and considerable compressional wave anisotropy.

Corner Crack Effect on the Seismic Behavior of Steel Plate Shear Wall System

Although, experimental studies have reported fracture at the corner of Steel Plate Shear Walls (SPSW), no study has been performed to investigate the crack effect, yet. Therefore, in this paper, the effect of crack at the corner of SPSWs on the seismic behavior of the system was investigated. Two probable cracks, that have been studies at the corner of SPSWs utilizing extended Finite Element me...

GPR and seismic imaging in a gypsum quarry

Ž . A combination of ground penetrating radar GPR and seismic imaging has been performed in a gypsum quarry in western Europe. The objective was to localize main cracks and damaged areas inside some of the pillars, which presented indications of having reached stress limits. The GPR imaging was designed from classical profiles with GPR processes and a customized, PC-based image-processing softw...

The seismic velocity distribution in the vicinity of a mine tunnel at Thabazimbi, South Africa

Analysis of the refracted arrivals on a seismic reflection profile recorded along the wall of a tunnel at an iron mine near Thabazimbi, South Africa, shows variations in P-wave velocity in dolomite away from the de-stressed zone that vary between 4.4 and 7.2 kmrs, though values greater than 5.8 kmrs predominate along most of the profile. The seismic velocities at the tunnel wall, however, vary ...

Relationship between head wave amplitudes and seismic refraction velocities to detect lateral variation in the refractor

Refractor ambiguities are big problem in seismic refraction method especially in seismic engineering. There can be hidden subsurface geological phenomena such as hidden faults and shear zones which are not simply predicted by the travel-time graph or some geophysical methods. Head wave amplitudes are used to show the resolution of refractor ambiguities and the existence of anisotropy in complex...
